If a machine is encrypted by ransomware, do the Google drive files get encrypted too?

I’m wondering if files on google drive FS (google for business) are protected from ransomware viruses that encrypt a complete endpoint.

If so; where can I find compelling arguments or proof. If not; what should I do to protect the files?

I was thinking of using a Synology NAS to copy the files from the cloud and save them locally. But I have 2 options; once a day, or continuously. Would the encrypted files also be copies from the cloud to the NAS and rendering them useless if I choose “continuously?”
